Power to the Public has started gathering signatures from Thurston County registered voters to place the following initiative on the ballot. The signatures are to prove enough of an interest that the electorate should vote on it. The initiative states:
PETITION FOR BALLOT MEASURE AUTHORIZING PUBLIC UTILITY DISTRICT NO. 1 OF THURSTON COUNTY TO ENGAGE IN CONSTRUCTION AND/OR ACQUISITION OF ELECTRICAL FACILITIES
The undersigned persons, all of whom reside within Public Utility District No. 1 of Thurston County, hereby petition the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners to place on the ballot, at the November 2020 general election, the proposal that Public Utility District No. 1 of Thurston County be authorized pursuant to RCW 54.08.070, to construct or acquire electric facilities for the generation, transmission, or distribution of electric power.
If we get 15,000 signatures by June, a local proposition will be placed on the ballot in Thurston County for the general election in Novemeber that will ask all voters the same question as above. If we win the vote with a yes, then the Thurston Public Utility District can begin the process of becoming this county’s electric utility.
This is word for word the same initiative that was tried in 2012 that lost. It is the position of Power to the Public that we can win this year and that we need to try again. The main reason that it lost in 2012 was because Puget Sound Energy spent millions of dollars corrupting our election. They spent 30 times as much money but we still got over 40% of the vote. This year we are running a campaign that won’t mince it’s words when it comes to the foreign owned dirty disaster that is PSE. The people’s gloves are coming off.
It is also a big turn out election year. People are paying more attention to local politics. People are angry at coal polluting foreign monopoly power corporations like Puget Sound Energy or forest fire causing PG&E in California. Folks are watching their rates being increased once again by PSE while they aren’t seeing raises in their wages.
It’s a new decade and we will start it off by winning the struggle begun nearly a hundred years ago by rural farmers who weren’t being served by private utilities. They wisely fought for the state laws that allow Public Utilities to exist and has brought public electricity to 55% of this state. The private electric utilities have spent a fortune trying to deceive the public that what’s down is up and what’s black is white. For the past 40 years they have mostly achieved that goal. However now it’s a new decade and we’re seeing 2020! Time to say no more to dirty foreign monopoly utilities!
The signature gathering has begun! The goal is to get 15,000 by June! We need you to sign. We need you to volunteer. We need you to give. NOW!
